This detailed study and catalogue explores family groups, and the relationship between the family and the state, in Archaic and Classical Greece through literary and artistic representations, excluding grave monuments. Lohr shows that monuments, such as figurines, reliefs and tripods, were dedicated to immediate family only during the 6th and 5th centuries BC, while three or more generations could be included during the 4th century. The representations primarily served a religious, legal, political or economic purpose and so the reliefs could provide family relationships and provide confirmation of citizenship.
